Braan Sauna: Calm & connection by the River Tay
Nestled beneath the trees, with the flow of the river below and the glow of the lanterns on Telford’s bridge, Braan Sauna is a space where a connection with the elements, nature and others come together. Our riverside sauna, lovingly handcrafted by Taybank proprietor Fraser, his trusted joiner Tommy, brother Blair, and partner Kim, is back again for autumn and winter.
The sauna itself is lined with cedar inside, charred Scots larch outside and features a powerful HUUM Sauna wood stove. The space fits up to eight people and has large windows overlooking the River Tay, Thomas Telford’s Dunkeld Bridge and the wooded Birnam Hill.
All sessions also include use of a 6-ft wide cold water plunge tank, cold bucket shower, changing box, cold outdoor shower, drinking water tap, fire pit and seating area.
Open daily for private bookings, we also host community sauna club sessions on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and Fridays at 11 a.m., providing a welcoming escape from the cold for individuals looking for a chance to connect with others in the local area.
The Health Benefits of Sauna
One of the greatest advantages of regular sauna use is the myriad of health benefits it offers. Whether you're a seasoned sauna enthusiast or new to the practice, here’s how the gentle heat and steam can improve your well-being:
Mental Well-being and Stress Relief
The warmth of the sauna creates a deeply relaxing environment. As your muscles loosen and your mind slows down, levels of cortisol (the body’s primary stress hormone) drop. Regular sauna sessions have been shown to reduce feelings of anxiety, depression, and stress while improving mood and overall mental wellbeing. The deep, rhythmic breathing encouraged by the heat helps you tune into a calm state, melting away the worries of the day.
Detoxification and Circulation
The intense heat of the sauna induces sweating, which helps to flush out toxins from your body. The process stimulates your cardiovascular system, boosting circulation and enhancing your heart's efficiency. Increased blood flow also aids in muscle recovery, making sauna sessions an excellent way to unwind after a long hike along the river or an active day exploring the area.
Immune System Boost
As temperatures drop in autumn and winter, your body becomes more vulnerable to colds and flu. Regular sauna use has been shown to strengthen the immune system by stimulating the production of white blood cells, which help ward off infections. The contrast of heat followed by cold-water immersion triggers a natural body response that enhances resilience and boosts your body's ability to fight illness.
Cold Water Immersion
Our cold water plunge tank and a bucket shower add a refreshing touch to your sauna routine. The 6-foot-wide plunge tank, located right next to the sauna, offers a revitalising jolt during your session—perfect whether you want to plunge in or just dip your toes. Immersing yourself in cold water can boost circulation, reduce inflammation, and enhance muscle recovery. The bucket shower provides a quick splash of cold water that can help you feel refreshed and alert after the heat, while also stimulating your immune system.
Immersing in Nature
Braan Sauna isn't just about the heat—it's about being surrounded by nature in one of Scotland’s most picturesque locations. Set against the stunning backdrop of the River Tay, with autumn’s golden leaves, the rushing river and winter’s crisp air lingering on the hills outside, you’ll find yourself completely immersed in the natural world.
After the warmth of the sauna, stepping outside into the fresh air awakens your senses. You can take a cold dip in our tank or simply relax by the river, either way, the contrast between the sauna’s heat and the cool outdoors has a revitalising effect, sharpening your mind and grounding you in the present moment.
Connecting with Friends, Family and the Local Community
As the darker days of autumn and winter settle in, Braan Sauna becomes a beacon of warmth and togetherness. It offers a sanctuary where you can connect with those around you—whether that's family, friends, or individuals in the wider community at our Community Sauna Club.
Saunas have long been places of gathering, where people come together to talk, laugh, and share stories. At Braan Sauna, the cosy, intimate setting fosters meaningful connections with loved ones, creating an environment where conversation flows naturally. It’s the perfect antidote to the isolation that can often creep in during the colder months.
Our Community Sauna Club sessions, held on Tuesday evenings and Friday mornings, offer a wonderful opportunity to meet others from the local area. These sessions create a welcoming space where everyone can come together to experience the sauna’s benefits while sharing the warmth of community spirit. Whether you’re new to the area or a long-time resident, these gatherings are open to all.
